How These Tools Are Built and Their Limits

Each calculator uses a transparent, published formula rather than a black-box model — the shadow-flicker calculator applies turbine geometry and solar elevation, the ice-throw tool uses the standstill and Seifert rotation formulas, the LCOE and IRR calculators use standard discounted-cashflow methodology. None of these tools replace an accredited expert report required for a BImSchG permit application; they exist to give a fast, transparent first estimate before commissioning the official version from a specialised engineering firm.

Because the underlying physics and financial formulas are universal, the calculators work for any onshore wind project regardless of country. What is specifically German is the regulatory framing layered on top — TA Lärm noise thresholds, LAI shadow-flicker guidance, BImSchG procedure types, and state-specific setback rules — which is why the interfaces and citations remain in German for now.

Suggested Order of Use

For a new site, a sensible sequence is: setback checker first (rules out obviously non-compliant sites), then sound-pressure and shadow-flicker calculators (screens for likely permitting friction), then the BImSchG pre-check (clarifies which procedure type applies), and finally the yield and financial calculators (CAPEX, LCOE, IRR) once the site has cleared the earlier filters. Running the financial tools before the regulatory ones risks modelling a project that a permit would never actually allow — a common mistake among developers new to the German market, where permitting constraints bind earlier and harder than in many other jurisdictions. Working through the tools in this order also surfaces conflicts early — a site that fails the setback check rarely needs a full financial model at all. This sequencing mirrors how experienced German developers actually scope a project internally before commissioning any paid expert report. It also keeps the number of paid engagements to a minimum: a project that clears the free screening tools cleanly enters the expert-report phase with far less risk of an expensive surprise midway through the permitting procedure.
